Researching a Used Car
Why should I research a used car before I buy it?
The answer it quite simple, to protect yourself from making a bad purchase. Many sellers are trying to make the most profit from the sale of their vehicle, or worse yet, you may be unwittingly purchasing a stolen vehicle. By taking the simple step of running the vehicle, you will know before you buy if the VIN has been associated with a total loss claim, the title has been branded* or has a stolen vehicle record.
*Vehicles are often branded as a result of an insurance company declaring them a total loss. A title brand may note that the vehicle is due for salvage, has been rebuilt from salvage, is flood-damaged, had a fraudulent odometer reading, or is a lemon. Source: Carfax.com
How do I “run” a VIN?
There are numerous private services to choose from that provide vehicle histories. In addition to the private services, there is a free VIN check provided by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB). You can use the NICB’s free VINCheck ® service to assist in determining if a vehicle has been reported as stolen or has been deemed a total loss vehicle.
What if I discover the vehicle has been stolen?
Do not take any action on you own. Contact law enforcement and provide the information you have found. You can reach the Kansas Highway Patrol at (785) 296-6800 or *47 on your wireless phone.
