Traffic Safety – Motor Carrier
Motor Carrier Inspectors (MCI)
There are two types of Motor Carrier Inspectors in Kansas: fixed weigh station personnel, and mobile units. All MCIs inspect for and enforce state and federal weight statutes and regulations.
Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program (MCSAP)
MCSAP troopers inspect commercial vehicles and drivers to decrease potential fatalities, injuries, and property damage.

Traffic Safety – Passenger Vehicles
Motorist Assistance Program
The Motorist Assistance Program is a joint program between the Kansas Highway Patrol and the Kansas Department of Transportation. Motorist Assist Technicians are assigned to high traffic areas in Kansas City, Topeka, Wichita, and Salina. These technicians perform vital services which keep travelers safe by providing traffic control at accident scenes, the removal of road debris, and helping stranded motorists when their vehicle breaks down.
Breath Alcohol Unit (BAU) and Drug Recognition Experts (DRE)
This unit trains drug recognition experts across the state in the detection of drivers under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
Ignition Interlock Program
Prevents subsequent drinking and driving behavior and regulates the ignition interlock device industry within Kansas.
Grant management
The Kansas Highway Patrol traffic safety grants program researches, secures and manages available grant opportunities to further support our mission of providing Service, Courtesy and Protection.
