Helicopter Flight Instructor – 220162

This is a 999 part-time position. A current FAA Rotorcraft – Helicopter Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) certificate – rating is required.

Salary: $60/hr

Position Description:

Provides initial, advanced, and recurrent helicopter specific ground and flight training to unit personnel including but not limited to FAA and/or assigned by the Troop Commander; Special emphasis on building safety conscious and tactically proficient KHP Tactical Helicopter Pilots and Flight Crews overall experience to safely execute demanding tactical law enforcement operations under all acceptable operational environments. A current FAA Rotorcraft – Helicopter Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) certificate – rating is required for this position.

Acts as Pilot-in-Command, Flight Instructor, and/or Tactical Flight Officer (TFO) as appropriate of assigned KHP Tactical Aircraft to facilitate safe, secure, efficient, and effective law enforcement – public safety focused Air Support missions. KHP Troop T – Air Support Unit is an essential and integral element of the Special Operations Bureau of the Kansas Highway Patrol. The incumbent shall execute Air Support operations to the greatest extent of the Unit’s capabilities under all acceptable environmental conditions and monitor the performance of other flight crew members. The incumbent relies on their professional training, experience, knowledge, skills and judgment to complete each assigned flight safely and successfully completes assigned ground and flight training as required by the agency for the operation of assigned aircraft.

Provides the Troop Commander initial and recurring assessments of current and forecasted KHP helicopter pilots current proficiency, deficiencies, general aptitude, crewmember interaction, air sense, tactical sense, risk/safety awareness and effective mitigation methods, and general ability to professionally and personally contribute to efficient and effective law enforcement helicopter operations. Assessments will include recommendations (as appropriate) for one-on-one meetings, training/re-training, counseling, implementation or removal of restrictions, focused evaluations and path forward models, and end-state recommendations (as applicable) on KHP helicopter pilots initial or continued authorization to fly KHP helicopters.

Qualifications:

Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Licensing & Certification: Valid Driver’s License.

Preferred Qualifications: The ability to safely operate a single engine aircraft under all reasonable environmental conditions to effectively execute airborne law enforcement missions and teach/develop the same to less experienced KHP helicopter pilots. Mastery of effective crew coordination and cockpit resource management, team building, effective work relationships, remain calm and in control during emergency situations, safety conscious – not risk adverse, leadership, planning and organization, decisiveness and initiative.

Law enforcement experience and prior Airborne Law Enforcement experience.

Requirements:

Necessary Special Requirements: KHP Training Center or Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center graduate. Current or previous KHP helicopter pilot-in-command authorization for day, night, and night vision goggle operations.

FAA Commercial & Certified Flight Instructor ratings for Rotorcraft-Helicopter is required. FAA Night Vision Device/Goggle endorsement is required. FAA Night Vision Device/Goggle instructor endorsement is preferred. Current FAA Class III medical certificate (at minimum) is required
