Location: Topeka/Shawnee County
Position Summary: Applies proficient knowledge and competency in the operation of the electronic security systems, video surveillance equipment, telephone communication system, and fire system. Continually observes state office buildings by physically checking all interior and exterior doors, stairways, lobbies, roof hatches, etc. to ensure the safety and security to affected areas, employees, and citizens. Diligently monitors and interprets information received via the electronic security system, video surveillance equipment, and fire system, and takes appropriate action. Attentive to suspicious activity and acts of crime. Notifies appropriate personnel via radio and/or phone to respond to locations of alarms, accidents, and other emergency situations. Establishes and maintains professional contact with government officials, legislators, dignitaries, state employees, visitors, and all other citizens to uphold the image and reputation of the Kansas Highway Patrol. Maintains a written log of all alarms, phone calls and radio traffic to provide a record of troop activity.
Utilizes good communication skills when making contact with members of the community. Builds and maintains good working relations with other state agencies. Answers questions and provides information to the public regarding state agencies and the City of Topeka. Checks employee identification and signs in public visitors when required.
Maintains certifications in CPR, first aid, AED (defibrillator) and is skilled in their application. Renders assistance to provide help to individuals who experience medical problems or accidents. Attends all required agency meetings and training sessions on equipment, agency systems, active shooter migration and active listening to achieve promotion to Capitol Area Guard II.
Maintains agency equipment and ensures uniforms are presented neat and clean in appearance. Reports all equipment needs to a supervisor as they arise.
When assigned, provides security during special assignments/events as prescribed by Troop Commander and/or direct supervisor. Utilizes agency computer programs and software; properly completes agency related forms when required.
Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Licensing & Certification: Valid Kansas Driver’s License.
Necessary Special Requirements:
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with fellow employees and the general public; establish and maintain effective work relationships; learn and comprehend the various computer, security, and surveillance systems; work rotating shifts and at different building assignments.
Post offer, Pre-employment Requirements:
Must submit to an extensive background investigation including fingerprints. Must be able to listen and comprehend verbal and written instructions; see to monitor video and surveillance equipment; hear and speak clearly on two-way radio and telephone; run, walk, kneel, stand for extended periods of time, sit for extended periods of time, climb stairs, bend, squat, stoop, twist, reach, push, pull, grasp; key for typing, and occasionally lift up to 75 lbs.
