Training Academy:
You never know what you will encounter as you protect the citizens of Kansas. This is why recruits spend 21 weeks undergoing training that is as unpredictable as what troopers face in the field.
By graduation day, recruits have not only earned the title of Kansas State Trooper and a well-deserved raise, but they have also formed valuable connections, learned from each other and built relationships that will follow them their entire career.

Position Summary & Responsibilities:
Troopers proudly provide Service, Courtesy and Protection to the citizens they serve by apprehending traffic violators, keeping impaired drivers off the road, investigating injury and fatal crashes, and assisting disabled motorists. While the expectations of this career are the same for each law enforcement position, a trooper’s career does not have to become stale. Experienced troopers have the option to progress to specialty units ranging from canine officer and dignitary protection. Other specialty assignments include drug interdiction, auto theft, accident investigation, IED disposal, and air support to mention a few.

Salary: $29.73 – $33.55

KP&F retirement
Trooper Trainees earn $29.73/hour during paid training. Training academy consists of 21 weeks of rigorous training; this training will be both physically and mentally challenging. Upon graduation the rate of pay will be increased to $32.78/ hour.
Individuals that meet the threshold, and are approved by executive command staff, may be considered for the opportunity to be a Lateral Transfer. These individuals will be hired at $33.55/hour.
After graduation, Trainees will begin 560 hours of field training with a field training officer; approved Lateral Transfer individuals will complete at least 400 hours of field training. The rate of pay will follow the Career Progression Plan based on years in service while employed with the Kansas Highway Patrol.
Station Assignments:
Location requests are taken into consideration, but the applicant must ultimately be willing to live and work anywhere in the State of Kansas.
Pre-employment Requirements:
Applicants must be a U.S. citizen and 21-years of age by the time the training academy begins. At time of appointment, candidate must take and pass a drug screening test approved by the Division of Personnel Services and be required to pass a physical exam administered by the hiring agency. This class requires the use of a firearm for law enforcement duties and therefore, candidates cannot have been convicted of, and must be free of any diversions from, a felony or misdemeanor domestic violence crime as set forth in 18 U.S.C. 922 (d) (9) and (g) (9).
