Continuing Education
K-9 Basic
The course presented here is for Narcotics Detector Dog/Handler, Explosive Detector Dogs/Handlers, and Patrol Dogs/Handlers. The curriculum corresponds to internationally accepted standards, with unique adaptations necessary in the American culture and Kansas Law Enforcement professional standards. The K-9 Program is designed to offer the most efficient and cost-effective training in the allotted time. The courses are quite intensive due to the short duration and quantity of information to be learned. To best serve the student/agency, KHP emphasizes training the Handler how to train the dog. In this way the graduating Handler becomes independent upon leaving the course and may complete the dog's training at home if the dog does not complete the regimen during the training course. Additionally, the Handler is trained on the procedures to maintain the graduation dog's proficiency even after leaving basic course. This course has the option of attending as a Single Purpose K9 Handler/Dog Team (5 weeks) or a Dual Purpose K9 Handler/Dog Team (10 weeks). There is no course fee. ACCOMODATIONS: Students will need to coordinate their own lodging and meals. Hotel/Motel are available close to training facility. K-9's can be housed at the motel at no charge, but the student provides their own dog food and food bowls. What to Bring: 50'-Line, 15'-line, waist leash, pinch collar, agitation collar, E-collar, muzzle, food and water bowl, and kennel in patrol vehicle. Physical Requirements: Must be able to run for 1 1/2 miles every morning. Registration: Complete this registration form along with a letter with department letterhead from your agency command staff stating they support your entrance to this class. Registration Deadline is August 24, 2026. Please send the support letter and any class questions to LT Justin Rohr at justin.rohr@ks.gov.
