KHP 2026-H-02: KHP to Conduct Sobriety Checkpoint in Cherokee County
The Kansas Highway Patrol, Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, and Cherokee Police Department will conduct a sobriety checkpoint on August 28, 2026, at US-400 and K-7 from 10 p.m. to midnight.
Sobriety checkpoints are aimed at reducing collision rates by identifying impaired drivers. The purpose of this checkpoint is to encourage compliance with state statutes prohibiting impaired driving and remove drivers who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol from Kansas roadways.
From 2015 through 2024, an average of more than 11,500 people died each year in drunk-driving crashes. Approximately 30% of traffic fatalities involve drunk drivers.
Motor vehicle crashes remain a leading cause of death among teenagers. Crashes involving a drunk driver are more likely to occur at night.
“An impaired driver removed from the road today means a family gets home tomorrow,” said Master Trooper Dakota Smith, Cherokee, Kansas.
The participating agencies appreciate the patience and cooperation from all citizens traveling through the checkpoint.
