Beware of Buyer Scams
Law enforcement across the nation is seeing a high volume of stolen and cloned vehicles entering the buyer market. Take these actions to protect yourself when purchasing a used vehicle.
What is a Cloned Vehicle?
- A cloned vehicle is a vehicle that has had its identifying features changed to hide its identity. Vehicles are usually cloned so auto thieves can sell stolen vehicles.
- If the price is too good to be true, it most likely is.
- Cloned vehicles are often listed $20,000 or more below fair market value. It seems like a good deal, but a reasonable person would not sell a vehicle at such a discounted price.
Reporting a Clone
Did you buy a cloned vehicle or found a suspected cloned vehicle for sale? Contact the Kansas Highway Patrol at (785) 296-6800
Research the VIN.
- Use the National Insurance Crime Bureau’s free VINCheck ® service, or other paid services, to assist in determining if a vehicle has been reported as stolen.
Follow these tips when purchasing a used vehicle
Be cautious when buying a vehicle off social media.
Too often bad or illegitimate vehicle purchases are made on platforms like Facebook Market Place and Craig’s List. These purchases can include stolen vehicles, salvaged vehicles, cloned vehicles, and vehicles without proper ownership documentation.
- When considering a purchase listed in this way, look at the seller, see how long they have been a member. Look at their history and any reviews.
Be cautious of sellers that only accept cash.
- This is a red flag!
Be cautious when dealing with out of state titles.
- Many people know what a valid Kansas title looks like, but not as many people know what a title from another state looks like. Cloned vehicles being recovered are generally sold with out of state titles.
- Compare the VIN on the vehicle to the title provided by the seller.
- Look at all possible VIN locations. They should all be the same and match the title.
- Stamped on the dashboard near the windshield, on the driver’s side of the vehicle
- On a plate or sticker on the driver’s side door jamb
- Stamped on the engine’s firewall
- On the insurance card and insurance policy
- If the VIN is missing or does not match the title, Do Not make the purchase!
When making a purchase:
- Know the vehicle’s approximate value compared to similar listings.
- Know the physical features of the vehicle you are looking to buy.
- Take someone with you to a safe neutral location for the transaction.
- Have your phone with you.
- It’s a good idea to verify the seller’s identity.
Be sure you are purchasing the vehicle from the legal owner.
- Trust your instincts! If you feel uneasy about the transaction, walk away.
