Troop J – Training Academy
The Training Academy is the home for KHP Trooper Trainees. Applicants must complete an extensive hiring process that includes:
- Background investigation
- Interviews
- Physical and psychological training
- Written test
Experienced instructors lead trainees through an extensive 21-week curriculum of basic and advanced law enforcement skills. Upon graduation, recruits begin field training in their assigned districts.
Academy
The Training Academy, located at the former Marymount College campus in Salina, Kansas, includes meeting rooms, auditoriums, a cafeteria, dormitory, and gymnasium, which are made available to outside agencies and organizations.
The Academy houses the Patrol’s Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) Computer Training Lab. The Academy also serves as host for the American Legion’s Cadet Law program, and Kansas Army National Guard utilizes the Academy’s large and small auditoriums for graduation exercises.
Continuing Education
Other law enforcement agencies may enroll in continuing education classes at the Academy, such as:
- Collision investigation and reconstruction
- Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance programs
- Criminal interdiction
- Hazardous materials transportation
- Officer survival training
- Passenger vehicle inspection
- Risk management
- Traffic radar instruction
