The Transition

A career as a Kansas State Trooper is perfect for the skills of self-discipline, motivation, and initiative you developed during your military service.  Life at the Training Academy will feel familiar due to the mental and physical challenges you will face, especially during the first few weeks.  Once you’re passed this phase, training transitions into hands-on scenarios and other exercises designed to help you succeed in this rewarding career.

Yes, you can still serve

Many Troopers continue their military service while working as a Trooper.  The Kansas Highway Patrol is willing to work around your National Guard or Reserve schedule to support your interest in serving our country and the citizens of Kansas concurrently.

Retirement

Reaching retirement is simple. Kansas Police and Fire (KP&F) Retirement is based upon your age and the number of years you work as a Trooper, making it possible for most troopers to retire in their early 50s. KP&F even allows you to purchase your service time with the military which further reduces the number of years needed to reach retirement.  So even if you start your Trooper career a little later due to military service, it’s still possible to retire young.
