KHP 2022-06: KHP and NHTSA WORK TOGETHER TO KEEP FIRST RESPONDERS SAFE

 Move Over. It’s the Law

The Kansas Highway Patrol is teaming up with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Region 7 states, including Arkansas, Iowa, Missouri, and Nebraska Law enforcement to inform the driving public about important lifesaving “Move Over” laws in effect in across the region and country.

The law, requiring motorists to slow down and, if safe to do so, move over when passing emergency vehicles stopped on the side of the road with emergency lights activated, has not reached all drivers yet. Since 2017, there have been 149 law enforcement officers alone killed in traffic-related incidents. Our goal is simple: We want all drivers to know that when they see flashing lights on the side of the road, they are required to Move Over. It’s the Law.

State Police Agencies from NHTSA Region 7 will have a press conference to discuss the enforcement campaign. Details are as follows:

WHO:

  • Kansas Highway Patrol
  • Arkansas State Police
  • Iowa State Patrol
  • Missouri State Highway Patrol
  • Nebraska State Patrol

TIME: 10:00 a.m.

DATE: Thursday, May 5, 2022

LOCATION:

Missouri Department of Transportation
600 NE Colbern Road
Lee’s Summit, MO 64086

The mission of NHTSA is to save lives, prevent injuries, and reduce the economic cost of crashes on our nation’s highways. This mission extends to law enforcement and all first responders, as well. We have a responsibility to protect those who protect us.
